How to care for your son’s brit!

I will certainly examine your son after the bris-milah ceremony and at the same time that I will review with you the following instructions:

1.  Know that cut of the foreskin as well as the glans (tip of penis) will be swollen for a week or two.

2. Expect a yellowish-whitish exudate/scab-like material in this area. Please don’t attempt to pick or remove this ‘healing tissue’ as it is part of the normal healing process.

3. Two snug diapers must remain on your son for the first 48 hours after the brit milah and you must provide them. This will ensure pressure to prevent bleeding and provide him with a cushion from handling and/or carrier seat (There will be NO BANDAGE or STITCHES on his penis.) Until the morning after the milah/circumcision, diaper changes must be performed a minimum number of times.

4. At diaper change clean him gently with wipes (or soft towel with luke-warm water. Mild soap may be used while bathing (which commences after umbilical cord falls off).

5.  Always remember to clean penis first, then his rear.

6. IMPORTANT:  Surround/smother your son’s penis thoroughly with Bacitracin/Neosporin before closing the diaper snugly. This is done for seven days at @ changing.  This ointment will function both as an antibiotic to prevent infection as well as minimize the diaper sticking to his penis.  Remember: you cannot place too much ointment on him, only too little!

7. Please have him visit the pediatrician or make arrangements to see me within.

Please use: Bacitracin ‘original’ (green/yellow box) without lidocaine OR Neosporin ‘original’ (green/yellow box) without promaxine HCl
If diaper sticks to the wound, don’t tug at the diaper as that may start bleeding; rather, run the diaper under warm water which usually dissolves the diaper. Call me immediately.
